PhD Admission

Applications can be accepted for the topics offered by the supervisors of the doctoral schools. (See below.)

For the application, please register to the online application platform of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) available at https://apply.elte.hu/ and after choosing the doctoral training of your choice, upload your documents requested by the system. If you apply for funding for your doctoral studies (for example Stipendium Hungaricum or other scholarships), please indicate that.

Fee of the application procedure: 9000 HUF (ca. 30 EUR)

Applicants for Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship do not have to pay the application fee.

The applicants will be interviewed by an admission committee (entrance examination). In this interview, they will be asked about previous university achievements, the individual research plan and the scientific competence in the field of interest.

Approximate date of the interviews: 14 May 2018 – 15 June 2018 

The Faculty's doctoral council decides of acceptance or rejection on the grounds of the admission committees reports made following the interview.

The resolution regarding admission or rejection is posted by the Doctoral and Academic Affairs Office.

Approximate date of the decision: 2-20 July 2018

The admission resolution does not create a student status in itself, only the enrolment at the University personally establishes the student status.

Length of the programmes: 4 years (8 semesters) + 1 year for submitting the dissertation

Credit points to be obtained: 240.

Years 1 and 2 (Semesters 1-4): doctoral training (courses) and research. The aims of the courses are to immerse students in their specialized field of study, to endow them with the research methodology needed for an academic career, and to develop their qualities as teachers and researchers. 

At the end of Semester 4, the doctoral students must take a comprehensive exam. When successful, the students can proceed to Semesters 5-8 (research and dissertation).

Tuition fee/semester:

For EU/EEA-citizens: 130.000 HUF (ca. 420 €)

Non-EU/EEA-citizens: 2.200 €, to be paid in HUF at the exchange rate valid on the day of payment.

The dissertation should be submitted within 3 years after the successful comprehensive exam. The doctoral candidates have to take defend their dissertation in a public debate.

The persons obtaining a doctoral degree shall be conferred the title of ‘doctor’ during a ceremonial graduation.
